Unlike simple point-based splitting, the tool divides your route by actual distance. This means each resulting GPX file covers approximately the same distance, even when the original track contains unevenly spaced GPS points.

How it works?

5. Review the total distance, number of files, and approximate distance per file.

Split GPX Files by Distance

GPX Split Tool divides your route based on actual distance rather than simply dividing the number of GPS points.

For example, if your GPX track is 10 kilometers long and you choose to split it into 4 files, the resulting files will cover approximately:

• File 1: 0–2.5 km
• File 2: 2.5–5 km
• File 3: 5–7.5 km
• File 4: 7.5–10 km

This produces much more consistent route sections, especially when the original GPX file contains GPS points that are unevenly spaced.

Split Long Routes into Daily Stages

One of the most useful applications of GPX Split Tool is dividing a long-distance route into smaller stages.

For example, if you have a 120 km hiking route and want to divide it into 6 roughly equal sections, the tool can automatically create six GPX files of approximately 20 km each.

You can then load each individual section onto your GPS device, watch, phone, or navigation app separately.

Exact Distance-Based Splitting

GPX tracks are made up of individual geographic points. These points are not always evenly distributed along the route, which means simply dividing a track by the number of points can create sections with very different distances.

GPX Split Tool avoids this problem by calculating the distance along the track and placing each split at the correct distance.

If the exact split location falls between two existing GPX points, the tool interpolates a new point at the appropriate position. This allows the resulting GPX files to be divided much more accurately by distance.

Preview Split Points on the Map

Before downloading the resulting files, you can see the complete GPX track on the map together with markers showing where each new file will begin and end.

This makes it easy to check how the route has been divided and understand where the individual GPX sections fall along the original track.

If you change the number of files, the split points are recalculated automatically.

Download All Split GPX Files as a ZIP

Once you are happy with the split, click Download ZIP.

The tool creates each route section as an individual .gpx file and packages all of them together into a single ZIP archive. This makes it easy to download, store, and transfer all sections at once.

After extracting the ZIP file, you can use the individual GPX files with compatible GPS devices, outdoor watches, route planners, and navigation apps.
