GPX to Google Maps lets you quickly upload a GPX file and view the route directly on Google Maps. See your track on a familiar map, switch between available map views, and analyze useful route information such as distance, time, speed, elevation, ascent, and descent.

When timestamp data is available, your route is color-coded by speed. If elevation data is included in the GPX file, you’ll also see an interactive elevation profile below the map.

How it works?

  4. Zoom, pan, and switch between available map views to explore the route and surrounding area.

Convert GPX to Google Maps

GPX files are widely used by GPS devices, sports watches, hiking apps, cycling apps, and route-planning tools, but they are not always convenient to inspect on their own.

GPX to Google Maps makes it easy to open a GPX track on a familiar Google Maps interface. Simply upload your file and the route is displayed on the map, allowing you to inspect where it goes and explore the surrounding roads, trails, towns, terrain, and landmarks.

The information shown depends on the data stored inside your GPX file. Timestamp data is required for speed calculations, while elevation data is required for altitude and ascent/descent statistics.

View Your GPX Route on Google Maps

One of the biggest advantages of viewing a GPX file on Google Maps is familiarity. You can immediately see your route in relation to roads, towns, landmarks, natural features, and the surrounding landscape.

This can be useful when checking a downloaded GPX route, planning an outdoor trip, reviewing a recorded activity, or simply trying to understand where a GPX track goes.

Google Maps is especially useful when you want to compare your GPX route with the wider road network and recognizable geographic features.

GPX on Satellite Maps

Satellite imagery gives you another way to understand your GPX route. Instead of viewing only roads and map features, you can compare the track with the actual landscape.

This can help you identify forests, fields, mountains, buildings, roads, rivers, and other visible terrain features surrounding your route.

Satellite view can be particularly useful for hiking, cycling, trail running, backpacking, off-road routes, and routes in unfamiliar areas.

Speed-Colored GPX Track

If your GPX file includes timestamps, GPX to Google Maps can calculate your speed along the route and display different sections of the track using different colors.

This gives you an immediate visual overview of where you were moving faster or slower.

If the GPX file does not contain the necessary timestamp information, the complete route is displayed as a red line instead.

Interactive Elevation Profile

When elevation data is available in your GPX file, an elevation chart is shown below the Google Map.

The profile lets you see climbs, descents, high points, and low points throughout the route. It is especially useful for hiking, trail running, cycling, and other activities where terrain can significantly affect difficulty.

The map and elevation chart are linked. Hover over the elevation profile to see the corresponding location on your GPX route.

GPX Route Statistics

In addition to displaying your GPX track on Google Maps, the tool calculates useful statistics from the information available in the file.

This gives you a quick overview of the route without needing to open the GPX file in dedicated GPS software.

Kilometer-by-Kilometer Breakdown

For more detailed analysis, your GPX track is divided into individual kilometer sections.

Where the necessary GPX data is available, each kilometer can show:

  • Average speed
  • Time
  • Ascent
  • Descent

This makes it easier to understand how your pace and terrain changed throughout the route.

GPX to Google Maps works with standard GPX files exported from many GPS devices, sports watches, navigation apps, and route-planning platforms.

You can use GPX tracks from services and devices such as Garmin, Suunto, Komoot, Gaia GPS, and many other apps that support GPX export.

If you can export your route or recorded activity as a GPX file, you can upload it and view it on Google Maps.
