Why Use a GPX Elevation Chart?
Distance alone doesn’t tell you how difficult a route will be. A 15 km hike over mostly flat terrain can feel very different from a 15 km route involving 1,000 meters of climbing.
An elevation profile gives you a visual overview of the terrain and helps you understand where climbs and descents occur along your route.

Understand the Elevation Profile
The elevation chart plots your route’s altitude against distance. As you move from left to right across the chart, you move from the beginning of the GPX route toward the finish.
Higher sections of the chart represent higher elevations, while steep upward sections indicate climbs and downward sections indicate descents.
Kilometer markers make it easier to see where elevation changes occur along the route. Elevation labels at these points provide additional context when planning your trip.
Total Ascent and Descent
In addition to the elevation chart, the tool calculates the total ascent and total descent of your route.
Total ascent represents the accumulated elevation gained throughout the route. For example, several separate climbs of 100 m, 200 m, and 150 m would contribute approximately 450 m of total ascent.
Total descent works in the same way but measures accumulated downhill elevation.
These values are often more useful than simply comparing the highest and lowest points because they better represent how much climbing and descending you’ll actually do.
Elevation Smoothing
GPS elevation data can contain small fluctuations that don’t represent meaningful changes in terrain. Without filtering, these tiny variations can artificially increase calculated ascent and descent.
This helps provide more useful ascent and descent estimates while preserving the overall shape of the elevation profile.
Keep in mind that the accuracy of the results ultimately depends on the elevation data contained in your GPX file.
Per-Kilometer Elevation Statistics
Sometimes the total ascent doesn’t tell the whole story.
The tool breaks the route into kilometer sections and shows the amount of ascent and descent for each kilometer. This makes it easier to identify demanding parts of the route and see where most of the climbing occurs.
For hikers and trail runners, this can help with pacing and estimating effort. For cyclists, it provides a quick way to identify sections where sustained climbing may occur.
Supported GPX Files
GPX to Elevation Chart supports standard GPX files containing either:
- Track points (
trkpt) - Route points (
rtept)
Each point must contain latitude, longitude, and elevation data.
Most GPS watches, navigation devices, and outdoor apps can export compatible GPX files, including devices and platforms such as Suunto, Garmin, Komoot, Gaia GPS, and many others.
If your GPX file does not contain elevation information, an elevation profile cannot be generated.
Plan Your Route Before You Go
An elevation profile is one of the easiest ways to understand the character of an unfamiliar route.
A route that looks straightforward on a map may contain steep climbs, repeated ascents and descents, or a demanding climb near the end. Seeing those changes beforehand can help you choose appropriate equipment, estimate how long the route may take, and plan your effort more effectively.
For longer hikes, trail races, and cycling routes, checking the elevation profile before setting out can be particularly valuable.
