Why Use a GPX Speed Profile?
Average speed only tells part of the story. Your pace can change significantly throughout a hike, run, or bike ride depending on terrain, elevation, surface conditions, stops, and fatigue.
A GPX speed profile shows where those changes happened by displaying your route directly on a map with segments colored according to speed.
This makes it useful for:

Understand the Speed Map
Your GPX track is divided into individual segments based on the recorded GPS points. The tool calculates the speed between consecutive points using their location and timestamps.
Each segment is then assigned a color according to its speed.
Slower sections appear closer to red, while faster sections appear closer to green. The colors between them represent the range of speeds recorded throughout your activity.
This gives you an immediate visual overview of where you moved quickly and where you slowed down.
Kilometer-by-Kilometer Speed Breakdown
In addition to the map, the tool calculates your average speed for each kilometer of the route.
This makes it easy to compare different sections and identify where your speed increased or decreased.
Each kilometer is displayed separately, and hovering over or focusing on it highlights the corresponding section directly on the map. You can therefore quickly connect the speed statistics with the exact location where they occurred.
For runners and cyclists, this can be particularly useful for reviewing pacing. For hikers, it can help reveal sections where steep terrain or difficult trail conditions significantly reduced speed.
Distance, Moving Time and Average Speed
The tool also provides key statistics for the complete GPX track:
- Distance – the total distance covered by the recorded route.
- Moving time – the amount of time represented by movement along the GPX track.
- Average speed – your average speed across the activity.
Together with the color-coded map and kilometer breakdown, these statistics provide a quick overview of your performance without requiring a dedicated fitness platform.
Supported Maps
GPX to Speed Profile supports several map layers, allowing you to choose the background that provides the most useful context for your activity.
Topographic Maps
- Topo (CyclOSM) – A detailed outdoor map showing paths, roads, terrain features, and cycling-related information.
- Topo (ESRI) – A global topographic map with terrain, landmarks, natural features, and elevation context.
Standard Map
- OSM Standard – The familiar OpenStreetMap view with roads, paths, settlements, and geographic features.
Satellite Map
- Satellite (ESRI) – Satellite imagery providing a realistic view of the landscape, vegetation, roads, and surrounding terrain.
You can switch between map layers to better understand where changes in speed occurred.
GPX Waypoints
If your GPX file contains waypoints, they are automatically displayed on the map.
Waypoints can represent locations such as summits, trail junctions, checkpoints, points of interest, or other positions saved by your GPS device or route-planning application.
Displaying them alongside the speed profile provides additional context when reviewing your route.
Supported GPX Files
GPX to Speed Profile works with GPX tracks containing timestamped track points.
Each track point needs location information and a timestamp so that the tool can calculate how quickly you traveled between consecutive GPS points.
Most GPS watches, cycling computers, navigation devices, and fitness apps can export this information as a GPX file.
If your GPX file does not contain timestamps, a speed profile cannot be calculated.
Analyze Your Activity on the Map
Numbers such as average speed are useful, but seeing your performance geographically can reveal much more.
A slow kilometer could be the result of a steep climb, technical trail, busy intersection, or difficult surface. A faster section might correspond to a descent, flat road, or easier terrain.
