For aerobic activities such as mountaineering and alpine climbing you need highly breathable rainwear so you don’t soak in your own sweat during exhausting ascents. Polartec NeoShell is by all accounts the most breathable waterproof fabric currently available. Polartec launched the NeoShell fabric in 2011 and soon it became clear that it offers better air permeability than other high-end waterproof/breathable fabrics, such as Gore-Tex Pro Shell and eVent. Furthermore, the NeoShell fabric is also very stretchy (it feels more like a softshell fabric than a hardshell fabric) and thus NeoShell rainwear typically provides great freedom of movement. However, because of the high price of NeoShell fabric, only a handful of brands makes NeoShell rainwear.

Here we selected the five best rain jackets which utilize Polartec NeoShell fabric. The Westcomb Apoc is a durable NeoShell jacket for alpine climbing, mountaineering and demanding hiking trips. It uses 50-denier NeoShell fabric, which gives it better abrasion resistance than lighter NeoShell shells while still retaining the soft, quiet and slightly stretchy feel that makes this fabric comfortable during high-output activity. The jacket has two large hand pockets that remain accessible with a backpack hip belt or climbing harness, plus a sleeve pocket and an internal media pocket. Pit zips add ventilation when the pace increases, and the helmet-compatible hood offers secure adjustment without restricting visibility. It is not the lightest NeoShell jacket in this selection, but it is one of the most protective and fully featured options.

The 66 North Snaefell Jacket is a versatile NeoShell shell designed for high-output mountain activities where breathability and comfort matter as much as weather protection. The NeoShell fabric has a soft, quiet feel and offers noticeably better air permeability than most traditional hardshell materials, making the jacket particularly well suited for ski touring, mountaineering, hiking and alpine climbing. The regular fit leaves enough room for layering while still allowing excellent freedom of movement thanks to articulated sleeves and a well-designed cut.

The jacket features two large chest pockets that remain accessible while wearing a backpack hip belt or climbing harness, a sleeve pocket and internal storage pockets for smaller essentials. The helmet-compatible hood is especially impressive with its dual adjustments, good facial protection and excellent mobility. Weather resistance is very good for most mountain conditions, although like many NeoShell jackets it prioritizes breathability over maximum waterproof ratings. Compared to more minimalist NeoShell shells, the Snaefell feels more substantial and durable, but also slightly heavier.

The Westcomb Shift LT Hoody is one of the lightest and most breathable NeoShell jackets ever made. At just around 11 ounces, it feels closer to a wind shell than a traditional hardshell jacket, yet it still provides dependable weather protection for fast-moving mountain activities. The highly air-permeable NeoShell fabric excels during strenuous ascents, ski touring and lightweight backpacking where minimizing internal moisture buildup is critical. Unlike many crinkly hardshells, the fabric is soft, stretchy and exceptionally quiet in use.

To achieve such low weight, Westcomb kept the design intentionally minimalist. The jacket uses lightweight 25-denier NeoShell fabric, has a streamlined cut and only includes a single zippered chest pocket. There are no pit zips, but the excellent breathability of the fabric largely compensates for this during aerobic activities. The helmet-compatible hood, adjustable cuffs and drawcord hem provide enough adjustability for technical use while keeping bulk to a minimum.

The Shift LT is not as durable or protective as heavier NeoShell or Gore-Tex shells, but for hikers, ski tourers and climbers who prioritize low weight and comfort during movement, it remains one of the most impressive lightweight waterproof shells available.

Fox Racing Flexair NeoShell Jacket

The Fox Racing Flexair NeoShell Jacket is primarily designed for mountain biking, but its combination of low weight, excellent breathability and mechanical stretch also makes it a strong option for hiking and other high-output outdoor activities. The NeoShell fabric delivers very good moisture management during strenuous movement while still providing dependable protection against rain and wind. Compared to more traditional hiking shells, the Flexair feels softer, quieter and noticeably more flexible during movement.

Fox paired the breathable NeoShell fabric with a streamlined, athletic fit that works particularly well during fast-paced activities. The jacket features large underarm vents, an exhaust vent on the back, waterproof zippers and a large helmet-compatible hood with multiple adjustments. The stretchy fabric and articulated fit provide outstanding mobility whether you’re riding technical trails or hiking steep terrain. Despite the lightweight construction, the jacket still feels durable enough for demanding outdoor use.

The bike-oriented design does come with some compromises for hiking and mountaineering. Storage is relatively limited compared to alpine shells, and the fit is slimmer and more tailored than many backpacking jackets. Nevertheless, for users who prioritize breathability, mobility and comfort during movement, the Flexair NeoShell is one of the best crossover shells available.

Filson Neoshell Reliance Jacket

The Filson NeoShell Reliance Jacket combines NeoShell breathability with a more rugged, lifestyle-oriented design than most technical alpine shells. It is a comfortable and highly weather-resistant jacket for hiking, backpacking, fishing and general outdoor use where durability and everyday versatility matter more than shaving every ounce. The 3-layer NeoShell fabric provides excellent breathability and mechanical stretch while remaining soft and quiet compared to traditional hardshell materials.

Filson equipped the jacket with multiple functional features including waterproof zippers, taped seams, pit zips and several large pockets. The stretch fabric allows excellent freedom of movement and makes the jacket comfortable during long days outdoors. The insulated chest pocket and handwarmer pockets also improve comfort in cold and wet conditions. Unlike more minimalist NeoShell shells, the Reliance Jacket feels substantial and protective without becoming excessively stiff or restrictive.

The downside is that the jacket is less optimized for technical alpine use. The hood is not helmet compatible and the lower pocket placement makes access more difficult while wearing a climbing harness or backpack hip belt. It is also heavier and bulkier than lightweight mountain-focused shells. Nevertheless, for users who want a breathable waterproof shell that transitions well between outdoor adventures and everyday wear, the Filson Reliance remains an excellent option.

4. Polartec NeoShell Jacket Buying Advice – What is important?

Weight and Packed Size:

Lightweight gear is recommended for aerobic activities because it puts less strain on your muscles than heavier gear and thus allows you to reach your destination faster and easier. Therefore, we only listed lightweight NeoShell jackets in this selection. The heaviest jacket weighs 20 ounces while the lightest weighs merely 12 ounces. Jackets in this selection pack very small and are thus perfect for multi-day trips and expeditions.

Pockets:

Because a rain jacket is worn over a base or mid layer, it should have at least one easy-accessible pocket for storing essentials. The pockets should of course be zippered and deep enough for storing large items such as a map, GPS device etc.

Hood:

The hood on your rain jacket should be adjustable for good fit, and compatible with a helmet if you are planning to do technical activities such as alpine climbing and mountaineering. A helmet compatible hood is bigger than a regular hood to fit over a climbing helmet.
