Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff Jacket and Pants Review

Material

The Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff jacket and pants are not surprisingly largely made out of the same materials – a 100% polyester (70% recycled) twill shell, insulated with 100-g THERMOLITE® ECO92 100% polyester (92% recycled). The jacket is, however, lined with a buttery-soft single-sided velour fleece (100% polyester – 35% recycled) for extra warmth and comfort, except inside the sleeves (minus the cuffs which also feature fleece) where the lining is the same as the shell material to avoid bulk. The Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff pants are lined with a lighter 100% recycled polyester taffeta, and there are also reinforcement patches of this material on the knees and seat. All materials seem to be of the very highest quality. Our daughter is not one to shy away from shrubberies with twigs and thorns, but there is only one pull in the fabric in the seat area of the pants. There are a few more pulls in the shell fabric of the jacket, but it has also been used longer and washed (much) more frequently. Still, I have no doubt that both garments will be passed on and worn with great joy by the next child.

Sizing and Fit

As mentioned in the review of the Patagonia Baby Capilene pants, the brand’s sizing is by the child’s age, rather than height as I’m used to from Europe. MK turned two in the middle of September 2021, and thus it made sense to ask for the size 2T(oddler). She fitted into both garments perfectly from the beginning, although she is quite tall for her age. The sleeve inseam on the jacket is 24 cm (9.5 in.), while the center back length from the base of the neck and down to the bottom hem is 36 cm (14.2 in.). The inseam of the pants is 30 cm (12 in.). It should be mentioned that the Patagonia Quilted Puff jacket and pants can be purchased separately, so you can get a larger sized jacket or pants if your child has a very long torso or vice versa.

While the width of both garments would probably be fine for the next years, her limbs will for sure grow longer than the sleeves and pant legs sometime in spring. Already now I can see that the ankle cuffs on the pants tend to slide up and bare her legs if she is for example sitting in the Osprey Poco child carrier. I don’t know if it is something Scandinavian, but I’m used to that all outerwear pants for kids are equipped with (removable/adjustable) foot straps to ensure that the pant legs don’t ride up and expose the legs to the cold or the elements. I’m really missing this feature on the Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff pants as it is something which could prolong their use – both size-wise and season-wise.

Comfort and Functionality

The Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff jacket and pants offer insulation and light weather protection. Due to the PFC-free DWR-finish on both garments, light rain is kept at bay for some time and the tight-woven shell material also makes the set somewhat wind-proof. Insulation-wise, I’d say that the set is suitable from temperatures below 20 ºC and down to around 5 ºC, depending on the windchill factor. The jacket is equipped with an overlapping front panel, which can be secured with a button underneath, that helps to keeps the neck warm without any cold metal hardware near the skin. In fact, the main zipper is offset to avoid that you accidentally pinch your child in the soft skin below the chin when zipping the jacket up. The Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff set is good for chilly days, but not freezing cold. It is very useful in the temperate climate of southern Scandinavia, where the weather is often windy, a bit wet and neither very hot nor very cold.

MK seems very comfortable in the set, and the low-bulk materials enables her to play freely, whether she is crouching in the sand pit or scrambling up a hill. I had not asked for specific colors when we agreed with Patagonia about testing the products, so it was a complete surprise to me to get a light pink jacket and dark blue pants. I was a bit worried about the Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff jacket being so delicate in color, but while I have had to wash it much more than the pants, no stain has managed to stick around for a longer period. This is probably due to the DWR finish, which the pants are also treated with. Both garments are equipped with a wide woven hand-me down ID label with the iconic brand logo on the other side (on the pants it also functions as a locker loop), so you can mark them with your child’s name.

Washing and Drying

Due to the two very different colors – soft pink and dark blue – I have washed the Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff jacket MUCH more than the pants. I think I might only have washed the pants in the machine once or twice in spite of MK loving to jump in mud like her big idol – Peppa Pig. Otherwise, I have just wiped them with a wet cloth. Both garments can be machine-washed at 40 ºC and tumble-dried on the low setting. I have mostly airdried them, however, and that works fine since the synthetic materials don’t absorb that much water.

Verdict

The Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff jacket and pants are great for all those in-between days of the year, where the temperatures demand medium insulation and the weather can be both sunny, windy or (slightly) rainy. It is a versatile set where the jacket can be used both zipped or just buttoned with one button, and the pants can be added whenever it gets a bit too cold to merely wear leggings on the bottom. If you live in a temperate climate, your child will get A LOT of wear out of the Patagonia Baby Quilted Puff set.  The only drawbacks are the lack of foot straps on the pants, and elasticated cuffs on the jacket to keep the cold out better.
